Turn your real holdings into exact trades. See whether the plan lasts.
Three jobs, one decision chain: keep the portfolio on target with account-aware Add / Reduce moves, improve and validate the investment model with fund scoring and honest backtests, and prove the model supports the household plan under three different ways markets can behave. The result shows its work; the judgment stays yours.

Keep it on target. Improve the model. Stress-test the plan.
The first three readings turn real accounts into a target and exact trades. The fourth tests the funds and the allocation behind those trades. The fifth asks whether that same model supports the household plan. Each reading has a page of its own.
Serious money, held together with three broken tools
If you manage your own portfolio, you've probably hit all three walls.
The spreadsheet that eats your Saturdays
Six accounts, two brokers, one hand-built spreadsheet. Every statement means re-typing, re-linking, re-checking a formula you wrote years ago. You maintain the tool instead of the plan.
The tracker that stops at "overweight"
Your portfolio tracker says you're 4% overweight equities. Fine. Which fund, in which account, by how many dollars? It goes quiet exactly where the work begins.
The retirement number you can't interrogate
A planner hands you "94% success" and won't say which assumptions drive it, or how a different reading of history would score the same plan. One confident number, zero visible knobs.
RangefinderInvest replaces all three with one instrument: the five readings above, taken on your own machine, from your own numbers.
"What exactly do I do about it?"
This is the handoff from measurement to action. Drift becomes a clear list: Add this, Reduce that, to the dollar, per account. Funds are in dollars and ETFs in whole shares. Anything inside your drift band stays a Hold, so noise never becomes churn. Point the same engine at new cash or a withdrawal and it writes that plan too.
The long version, concessions included: how the rebalancing engine works, and who it doesn't fit.
Drift → moves
Every account, slice and ticker classified Add / Reduce / Hold, with brokerage-aware ordering and off-model holdings flagged to Close.

Withdraw $40,000
Raise cash tax-aware: lot-level gain/loss, estimated tax, and Harvest badges where a loss can be booked.

Contribute & deploy
Enter new cash and get an add-only deploy plan that closes your largest gaps first.

- ✓Tax-aware sequencing: withdrawals draw taxable → tax-deferred → Roth, respect each account's Allow withdrawals flag, and offer proportional, trim-overweight-first or preserve-tax-lots strategies, with HIFO / FIFO / spec-ID lot methods and wash-sale flags.
- ✓A rebalance prices its own suggestion. The turnover banner totals what would be sold, reads distinctly when positions would close entirely, and carries an estimated realized-tax figure at your assumed rates.
- ✓Now / Defer guidance from a cash-reserve floor and an equity-drawdown band nudges you to spend cash before touching equities in a dip.
- ✓It keeps the discipline for you. Each model carries a rebalance cadence, and the Dashboard shows when a rebalance is due, with review / mark-done tracking.
- ✓You place every order yourself, at your own broker. RangefinderInvest never connects, never trades, never touches the money.
"When can I retire, and will the money last?"
The question the whole loop exists for. A seeded Monte-Carlo projection of your entire household in today's dollars, from your real balances split by tax treatment. It models the things that actually decide the answer: spending, Social Security, per-owner RMDs, and real federal taxes, year by simulated year.
Fictional demo Four sample households ship with the app. Every number here is read from a deterministic run on those samples. Load one and you'll see the same thing.
One plan, three verdicts on purpose
A single return model can make one result look more certain than it is. RangefinderInvest scores the same plan three ways: a forward normal draw, a fat-tailed Student-t, and a replay of the actual 1928–2025 record. The spread between them tells you how much your plan leans on one reading of history.
Underneath sit the parts that decide real outcomes: a real tax engine with federal brackets, the Social-Security provisional-income worksheet and ACA/IRMAA ceilings; per-owner RMDs; fill-to-bracket Roth conversions; survivorship and the widow's penalty; a spending guardrail that reports its own cost; and a home-affordability answer that re-solves itself for the market you'd live through if you waited.

Real capture from a bundled sample.
Built to be doubted
A tool for your life savings should expect skepticism and welcome it. RangefinderInvest earns trust by what it refuses to do, and by showing its work everywhere else. Every reading comes with its error bars. An instrument that hides its tolerance isn't an instrument. It's a salesman.
If you got here comparing against a free dashboard that links your accounts, that trade is spelled out in full: aggregation vs. nothing to aggregate.
What it will never do
- Connect to your brokerage. No login, no linked accounts, no credentials to leak. CSV and manual entry, period.
- Send portfolio data in the background. Everything lives in one SQLite file. Price lookups and the update check carry no holdings, balances, transactions, or plans.
- Pick investments for you. It compares funds on evidence and turns your targets into moves. The judgment stays yours.
- Suggest a trade you didn't ask for. Accounts you mark track what I hold or just compare are measured, never traded toward. Nothing gets suggested that you didn't opt into.
- Move money or place trades. You place every order yourself, at your own broker.
- Pretend to be advice. Every result is illustrative and says so at the point of use. It's a calculator for the plan you design.
How it earns the numbers
- Deterministic and seeded. Every projection reproduces exactly from a seed, so two runs are a fair, paired comparison, never sampling noise.
- Honest windows. Backtests state their true data window and disclose any extrapolation; nothing is silently truncated.
- Documented simplifications. Where the model simplifies (ordinary-income-only taxes), it says so on the panel, not in fine print.
- Tested, reproducible math. Time-weighted return, cost basis, Sharpe/Sortino/Calmar, and the Score use tested, reproducible arithmetic, not a black box.
- Data sources, stated plainly. Tiingo is the default price source, with your own free key. Official tsp.gov prices cover the TSP funds, and a free Yahoo Finance option is there if you want it: clearly labeled, off by default, for personal use. Attribution lives right on the About screen.
Local by default. Explicit when you choose otherwise.
Accounts, holdings and plans stay in one file you can read, move and back up. RangefinderInvest sends none of them anywhere on its own. Configured price requests carry ticker symbols; the update check carries the app version, OS, a first-run flag and a temporary retry receipt. Both paths can be turned off.
AI stays secondary and opt-in. If you enable the Assistant or connect an AI client, it receives the portfolio context and tool results you authorize. Hosted services handle that content under their own terms; a local model can keep the flow on your machine. Ten app-defined tools can read and compute, and the only write is a target-model proposal you must approve. Optional HTTP and local-network doors are also off by default.
Your portfolio is never sent on its own
Block the app in your firewall and the core portfolio and planning tools keep working. Price lookups and the update check carry no accounts, holdings or plans. AI access is off until you enable it and choose the connection.
No account, no login
Open it and go. No Kalman product sign-up, cloud profile, usage analytics or crash telemetry.
One file you own
A single SQLite file. Move it to a synced folder or a drive in your safe. Automatic timestamped backups. Zero lock-in.
A license no one can revoke
One-time purchase, verified offline on your machine. Activation contacts no server at all. There is nothing that could switch it off.
For anyone who wants to understand their own money
Whether you place every trade yourself or someone manages it for you, the promise is the same: a clear, private view of what you own, what it's doing, and where it's headed.
You manage it all yourself
You run real multi-account portfolios at Fidelity, Schwab and beyond, and you want the full disciplined loop: a target, exact moves toward it, funds chosen on evidence, and a drawdown plan you've stress-tested.
Show me exactly what to place, and let me place it.
Someone manages it; you verify
Set your advisor's model as a reference. RangefinderInvest measures your real accounts against it ("you're 4 points overweight U.S. equity"), backtests it against a three-fund alternative, and never suggests a trade. Add the fee and see what it costs your outcome.
I want to understand and question what I'm paying for.
You have a TSP, and finally a tool that does too
One click downloads the official daily share prices for all 16 TSP funds (G, F, C, S, I and every Lifecycle fund), so your Thrift Savings Plan sits as real holdings next to every brokerage account: tracked, compared, backtested, projected.
Put my whole plan, TSP included, on one screen.
The full story, limits included: RangefinderInvest for your Thrift Savings Plan.

Real capture: set a model as a reference and RangefinderInvest measures your holdings against it by asset class, suggesting nothing. The advised investor's view.

Real capture: one click adds G, F, C, S, I and every Lifecycle fund, with the full official price history from tsp.gov.
I'm a retired electrical engineer, not a financial adviser. RangefinderInvest grew from decades of spreadsheet models for our household accounts. I built it to keep its assumptions visible and its runs reproducible.
Most trackers show you a pie chart.
RangefinderInvest hands you the moves and the distance.
| Capability | Typical tracker or planner | RangefinderInvest |
|---|---|---|
| The output | "You're overweight equities" | "Add to the bond slice here, reduce the off-model AAPL there," illustrative, to the dollar, per account |
| Your accounts | One account, or a linked login you have to trust | Every account (TSP, 401(k), IRAs, HSA, taxable) with no credentials, ever |
| Choosing funds | Star ratings and guesswork | A tunable, risk-adjusted Score across your NTF universe, plus a whole-model optimizer |
| Backtesting | One growth curve, if that | A full tearsheet with benchmark stats, drawdowns and honest data windows |
| Retirement math | One bell curve, one confident number | Three return models side by side; the spread is part of the answer |
| Planning depth | A 4%-rule slider | Real taxes, per-owner RMDs, Roth-conversion and affordability optimizers, a spending guardrail, a survivorship model |
| Bonds & CDs | Ignored, or marked to $0 | A real T-bill/CD ladder priced by accrual, counted in rebalancing |
| Your data | On someone else's server, feeding someone else's model | One local file on your machine, backed up on your terms |
| The business model | A subscription, billed for as long as you want access | One-time license, 12 months of updates included. Nothing auto-renews and nothing stops working if you never pay again |
Depth where it counts
The big loop is backed by the small correctness that makes it trustworthy.
True time-weighted return
Performance that neutralizes your deposit timing, measuring the portfolio, not your cash-flow luck.

All 16 TSP funds with full official price history from tsp.gov: 56,000+ rows back to 2003, added with one click.
Two price sources
Tiingo as the licensed default (your own free key), plus a no-key Yahoo Finance opt-in. Pin a source per ticker, with a clean full-history rebuild on change.
Versioned allocations
Effective-dated model versions drive today's trades and yesterday's backtests, with every change a marker on the chart.

Account snapshots
For accounts you don't track trade-by-trade, store periodic stated holdings valued with Modified-Dietz returns.
Manual split correction
Fix a split your data source missed with a date and ratio. It is corrected at read time, with the download never mutated.
Pluggable return regimes
Multi-asset glide paths, Student-t fat tails, historical-sequence replay and AR(1) inflation, calibrated and tested.
Backups you own
Automatic timestamped backups on launch with a configurable keep-count, plus on-demand backup, restore, delete.

What remains yours
RangefinderInvest runs on your machine and your portfolio lives in a file you control. Renting you access to your own plan would miss the whole point.
- ✓Your installed version keeps working. Twelve months of updates are included; newer builds after that are optional and never automatic.
- ✓The license verifies offline. No Kalman server can disable the installed copy.
- ✓Your plan stays portable. It lives in one SQLite file you can move or back up; CSV exports remain available.
Buy it once. Keep the version and the plan.

Good to know
What does it cost, and which platforms? +
A one-time license, no subscription, with a 30-day free trial that needs no card. It includes 12 months of updates. The license itself never expires and nothing ever locks: when the year is up, every version you already have keeps working exactly as it did. Another year of new versions is an optional one-time update pass, never an automatic charge. Current figures are in the pricing section. macOS, Windows and Linux are all available to download now. Windows has a current direct installer plus a Microsoft-signed Store build; the download section labels their versions separately. The retirement planning assumes the US tax system; not right for you? Reply within 30 days for a refund (terms).
Does RangefinderInvest connect to my brokerage? +
No, and that's by design. You import a CSV transaction export from Fidelity or Schwab, or type in your monthly statement. RangefinderInvest never has your login, never moves money, and never places a trade. It shows illustrative Add / Reduce moves toward the target you set; you place every order yourself.
Where is my data stored? +
In a single SQLite file on your own machine. There's no Kalman-hosted portfolio cloud, product account, usage analytics or crash telemetry. You can see exactly where the file lives, move it to a synced folder or external drive, and keep automatic timestamped backups.
Is this financial or investment advice? +
No. RangefinderInvest is a calculator for a plan you design. It shows illustrative Add / Reduce moves toward the target allocation you set, and hypothetical projections from assumptions you enter. It is not financial, investment, or tax advice, and it doesn't recommend securities. Confirm prices, tax lots, wash-sale rules and suitability with your broker or advisor before acting; the app carries the same note at the point of each result.
Which brokerages are supported? +
The CSV importer auto-detects Fidelity and Schwab formats, and brokerage-aware ordering plus NTF (no-transaction-fee) filtering cover both. The model layer itself is brokerage-agnostic. Implement the same target with whatever tickers you hold, wherever you hold them.
Set up in about the time it takes to read a statement
No account to make, nothing to connect. Open it and you're one of two doors from your real numbers, and a short checklist carries you the rest of the way. The long version, step by step: the getting-started guide.

Explore a sample to see everything working in seconds, or set up your own. Neither path needs an account, brokerage login, or upload.

A checklist that survives restarts walks you from a first account to your first rebalance and never dead-ends half-done.

On Windows this opens the Store app straight to the listing; press Get. If nothing opens, this PC hasn't got the Store (some Windows installs don't), so take the direct installer below instead.
Or get the current direct release 0.49.3 (.exe, 168 MB)The direct .exe triggers a security warning, sometimes two. Here's why, and what to do.
Windows SmartScreen and Chrome's equivalent flag installers they haven't seen downloaded many times yet. It's a measure of how well known a file is, not whether it's safe. Every new independent app starts at zero and earns its way out. We haven't bought a code-signing certificate because, per Microsoft's current guidance, no certificate grants an instant bypass any more; reputation still has to be earned either way.
Depending on your browser and Windows settings you'll meet one of these, sometimes both:
- Downloading: the browser says the file "isn't commonly downloaded". In Edge, the way through is hidden twice over: open the … menu beside the file in the downloads list and choose Keep, then, if a second box appears whose big button says Delete, click the ˅ on that button and choose Keep anyway. Deleting is the prominent option, not the correct one.
- Opening it: if Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway. You may not see this one at all.
Either box may also list the publisher as Unknown. That's the missing certificate and nothing more; the SHA-256 below is how you check the file rather than taking our word for it.
Prefer to skip it entirely? Use the Microsoft Store button above. Microsoft re-signs that build, so there's no warning at all. If you reach the Store listing in a browser instead, click its View in Store button rather than Download: the web page's Download button gives you a small Microsoft-made helper .exe, which is new enough to draw the same unrecognized-file warning. Either way you can confirm you got the exact file we published by checking the SHA-256 below.

Installing on Linux +
Ubuntu, Debian and derivatives: use the .deb. Installing from a terminal is the smoothest path: it skips the software-center "not from a verified source" warning (that's just a flag for any direct download, not a problem with the app) and sets up the sandbox correctly:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./RangefinderInvest-*.deb
You can double-click it instead and click Install past the warning for the same result.
Other distributions (Fedora, Arch, openSUSE…): use the AppImage. Download it, mark it executable and run it:
chmod +x RangefinderInvest-*.AppImage
./RangefinderInvest-*.AppImage
Download the AppImage. It needs FUSE (sudo apt install libfuse2t64 on Debian/Ubuntu, or your distro's equivalent). On Ubuntu 23.10+ we recommend the .deb instead. Recent Ubuntu blocks the sandbox an AppImage relies on, so the .deb is the reliable choice there.
