Terms of Sale & License

Who you're buying from

RangefinderInvest is made and sold by Kalman Software LLC, a Colorado limited liability company based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Throughout this page, "we" and "us" mean Kalman Software LLC, and "you" means the person or business buying the license.

The sale runs through Stripe, acting as our merchant of record: Stripe is the seller on the transaction, takes the payment, and is responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax or VAT wherever you are. Your card details go to Stripe and never to us. We never see or store a card number. Checkout is branded Link, Stripe's consumer checkout, so that is the name on your receipt and statement. Your licence and your support come from us and we can refund you directly; Link's own support can also refund a purchase, and Stripe handles any card dispute.

The free trial

Every download includes a 30-day trial with every feature unlocked. the clock starts on the first commercial launch. The full app includes the projection engine and every optimizer. It needs no card, no account, and no sign-up of any kind.

When the trial ends, RangefinderInvest stays open read-only. Your accounts, holdings, models, and plans remain visible and exportable. Your data is never held hostage, but changes and new work wait until a license is activated.

What a license gives you

Buying a license gives you a perpetual, non-exclusive right to use RangefinderInvest for as long as you like. There is no subscription, nothing auto-renews, and the license has no expiry date. Specifically:

• The license covers every release published in the 12 months after you buy, including bug fixes, improvements, and new features, at no further cost, and those releases are yours permanently.
• It is verified on your own machine. Activating contacts no server and needs no account, and no server can switch it off, including ours.
• You can move it to a new machine, and use it on macOS, Windows, or Linux as those builds ship. It's tied to you, not to hardware or one platform.
• You may use it for your own household's finances, whether personally or through your own business entity.

The license is for you. Please don't share your key publicly, resell it, or hand it around a firm or investment club. If you need several people covered, email us and we'll sort something out. You also agree not to reverse-engineer the app to work around licensing, and not to strip or forge the license mechanism itself.

You are buying a license to use the software, not the software itself. Kalman Software LLC keeps ownership of RangefinderInvest and everything in it. Market data shown in the app comes from providers with their own terms. It is for your personal use, not for redistribution.

Installing from the Microsoft Store changes nothing here: the Store handles the download and updates, the same 30-day trial applies, and the same license key activates it.

What "12 months of updates" means

Every version published inside your 12 months is yours permanently. It keeps running with every feature working for as long as you keep the files. Nothing is switched off, degraded, or nagged when the year passes. What ends is only your claim on newer releases.

That claim is checked only when a newer build is installed or first started, never while you are working. A lapsed update year cannot interrupt an app you are running, and cannot disable price lookups, imports, projections, exports, or anything else in a version you already have. There is no kill switch here to lapse into.

The update pass is optional: $49 for another year of releases, which for this app means the annual calibration, each tax year's brackets, RMD ages and Social Security parameters, bought when you want it and never charged automatically. It extends coverage one year from the current coverage end, not from the purchase date: renewing early loses no days, and renewing after a lapse does not grant releases from the uncovered gap. Settings shows the exact through-date before you decide.

Where a license key carries a date, that date is the last day whose releases it includes. Keys issued without one cover every version, forever. Every license sold before this changed is such a key, and stays that way permanently.

Refunds

The 30-day trial exists precisely so nobody has to buy on faith. You can run every feature against your own portfolio before paying a cent. The refund window is the backstop for the case the trial didn't catch.

Refunds go back to the card you paid with, usually within a few business days once issued (your bank sets the exact timing). Sales tax collected on the order is refunded along with it. After a refund, the license key stops being licensed to you; please remove it from your machines. Your portfolio data is yours and stays on your computer either way; a refund never touches it.

Past 30 days, email anyway. We'd rather sort out a real problem than hold onto money from someone who isn't using the software.

If something looks wrong on your card statement, please email us before disputing it with your bank. Our checkout runs through Link, Stripe's checkout service, so the charge appears as LINK.COM* plus a short form of the name of the company that makes RangefinderInvest, rather than the app's own name. Nearly every dispute we could receive is something a single reply would have fixed faster.

Sold in the United States only

You can buy RangefinderInvest if you are in the fifty United States or the District of Columbia and can give a US billing address. Checkout collects that address, and an order placed from outside is refused or refunded. By buying, you're telling us the location and billing details you entered are accurate.

The retirement planning is built around the US system: federal tax brackets, Social Security, RMDs, ACA subsidies and IRMAA. Those aren't a setting you can switch; they're the model. Selling only where that model applies is also how we keep this a small US business rather than one answering to consumer law in a dozen countries.

Downloading and the trial are open to anyone, anywhere. The 30-day trial is the full app and needs no card, so you can see exactly what it does before any question of buying comes up.

A license you already own is not tied to where you are. Activation is offline and your key keeps working if you travel or move abroad, subject to applicable law, export controls and sanctions. What's limited is the purchase, not the software.

Price and tax

Prices are in US dollars and shown before you pay. US sales tax is calculated at checkout based on your billing address, wherever the state requires it. Any tax shown is collected and remitted by Stripe as merchant of record, not by us.

Launch pricing is exactly that: an introductory price can end, and a higher price applies afterward. Whatever you paid is what your perpetual license cost. Later price changes never reach back to a license already bought.

Not financial advice

RangefinderInvest is a calculator for a plan you design. It shows illustrative Add / Reduce moves toward a target allocation you set, and hypothetical projections from assumptions you enter. It is not financial, investment, tax, or legal advice; we are not your broker, investment adviser, or accountant; and nothing in the app is a recommendation to buy or sell any security.

It has no brokerage connection: no login, no linked account, no order routing. It never places a trade, moves money, or holds custody of anything. You place every order yourself. Projections are simulations, not forecasts; the tax model is a documented simplification; and past performance, including any backtest the app runs, does not predict future results. Confirm prices, tax lots, wash-sale rules, and suitability with your broker, CPA, or advisor before acting.

Your data

Your portfolio lives in a database file on your own machine. We have no copy and no access. From a purchase we receive your name, email address, and order details, which is enough to issue your license, email it to you, and support you afterward. Warranty disclaimer

We build this carefully and use it ourselves, but the software is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that RangefinderInvest will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that every number it computes is correct for your situation. Verify anything that matters, including figures that drive an investment decision and anything going on a tax return, against your broker's own statements and a professional.

Some states don't allow certain warranty exclusions, so parts of this may not apply to you.

Limits of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Kalman Software LLC is not liable for investment losses, lost profits, lost data, or any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of RangefinderInvest, even if we were told such damages were possible. Our total liability for any claim relating to the software or these terms is limited to the amount you paid us for the license.

That limit is a deliberate part of a one-time price in the low hundreds: it's what makes it possible to sell a serious tool at that number rather than at enterprise rates. Some states don't allow certain limitations, so parts of this may not apply to you.

If these terms change

We may update these terms for a new product, a changed refund process, or plain clarity. The terms in force when you bought are the ones that govern your purchase and your license; a later change can't retroactively narrow what you already paid for. Changes take effect for new purchases when posted here, and the effective date at the top changes with them.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute belongs in the state or federal courts located in Larimer County, Colorado. If any provision here is unenforceable, the rest stays in force.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights your state's consumer-protection law gives you and doesn't allow to be waived.
