The button at the top of the sidebar names which portfolio is open, and is the one place that claim is made. It reads one of three ways:
- Local portfolio: your own data, the ordinary case.
- Sample: {name}: a life-stage demo household is open instead. Every number on every page belongs to the sample, not to you, and the gold styling is a deliberate choice, not a warning.
- Read-only preview: the browser preview with no desktop app behind it; there is no file to manage, so the button opens nothing.
Clicking it (on the desktop app) opens the same actions Files holds: Back up now, Restore..., Explore sample portfolios, and Data location. While a sample is open, a fifth item, Back to my portfolio, closes it and reopens your own data; your own portfolio is never touched by exploring a sample; nothing you do to a demo carries over.
This menu replaced an older topbar status pill that read Local portfolio even while a sample was open. That was wrong every time it happened: the one control claiming to say where the data came from was saying the opposite.
