Rebalancing turns the gap between your target model and your actual holdings into a concrete, illustrative trade list. One engine, three modes:
- Rebalance: drift → suggested trades per account, slice and ticker. Add / Reduce / Close / Deploy lead while Hold rows stay behind Show N holds. The summary gives order count, dollars, closures, cash deployment and a known or explicitly unknown tax estimate.
- Withdraw: choose how cash is funded, see the tax-aware order with tax/harvest flags, then rebalance now or defer.
- Contribute: buy-only rebalancing. New money is routed to your most under-target slices, nothing is sold, so no gains are realized.
Before interpreting an empty result, the page checks every account in the selected scope. If at least one account has complete setup and valued inputs, its orders and totals remain visible. An account excluded notice names each account omitted from the result and links to its recovery step. The page uses a full recovery state only when no account in scope can produce a trustworthy result:
- If no account is eligible for the current mode, go to Accounts and turn on the needed planning flags. Withdraw requires both Rebalance and Withdrawals; the other two modes require Rebalance.
- If an eligible account has no assigned model, or its assignment no longer points to a model, that account is excluded until you choose one on Accounts.
- If the current model version has no executable allocation, go to Target Models. Every ordinary positive-weight slice needs a positive-weight fund; ladder and self-directed slices may intentionally be fundless.
- Rebalance and Withdraw need a holding or cash balance. If the selected accounts have none, go to Holdings and import or enter them. Contribute remains usable with a valid empty model because the contribution itself can establish the allocation.
- If holdings exist but none has a usable value, go to Settings → Price data and repair the price source or stored prices.
These checks prevent one account's missing prerequisite from hiding another account's real orders, and prevent an all-blocked scope from looking like an empty table, an amount error or a portfolio that is already on target.
Drift threshold makes small gaps Hold; minimum trade size floors out noise-sized orders. These are the same settings the Dashboard summary uses.
Account pins left and Action / order pins right at minimum width. The real Review button opens target/current/drift facts and why the row exists. The trade, withdrawal and contribution tables are named keyboard regions: Tab to the table boundary, then use Left/Right to scroll to clipped columns. Action chips combine freely. Until you change a chip or filter control, the action-first selection follows live rows whenever the threshold, minimum trade, models, holdings, account selection or database changes. Your first filter action makes it a custom selection, which is then preserved for the rest of the session, including across a database switch. Show all is also a custom filter action. Export CSV · visible rows exports only trustworthy rows that those filters show, with raw numbers, then names every account excluded from the result and why. Withdraw's funding-orders export carries the same exclusion block, so a saved plan never silently omits an account that could not be evaluated.
Nothing to trade means every usable row is genuinely within the drift threshold. A plan whose only potential orders are below the minimum trade is identified that way; it is not called on target.
Uninvested settlement cash is a separate actionable state. When the page shows Deploy $N, the summary and cash row carry that next step even if every security order is below the minimum trade size. The page does not show a simultaneous No order clears warning for the same result.
Full closures, missing cost basis and possible wash sales remain in expandable Trade checks below the orders; the summary keeps the consequence visible. Close looks different from a routine reduction because it exits the position.
Withdraw mode reads equity drift, drawdown and reserve months to suggest a strategy. The account selector narrows funding orders, while reserve runway remains a household-wide fact; an account with incomplete setup or unusable balances is excluded from that advice. It describes your portfolio; it never predicts markets. You choose.
