Core cash vehicles

From RangefinderInvest's built-in help · applies to version 0.49.3

The current core cash vehicle is where this account holds uninvested cash today. It may be a regular cash balance or a money-market fund such as the symbol shown on your latest statement.

During account setup, enter the current vehicle. You do not need to reconstruct former vehicles. If a supported broker export shows that cash moved from one core fund to another, RangefinderInvest presents the date and both symbols for you to confirm.

A confirmed vehicle change is internal cash movement. It is not counted as a deposit, withdrawal, purchase, or sale. Dividends or corrections posted later by the former vehicle still count as cash activity without making that former fund current again.

Choose Regular cash balance when uninvested cash has no money-market ticker. Choose I'm not sure yet instead of guessing. To add a symbol that is not listed, choose Add another vehicle…; RangefinderInvest records it as a money-market security without changing an existing security's classification.

A money-market fund bought manually is an ordinary holding unless the account identifies it as a core cash vehicle. You can review the current answer and dated history from the account's edit panel on Accounts.

Enter a core cash vehicle's value as cash, never as a holdings row. A ticker this account names as core cash, now or formerly, is counted in core cash, so entering it again in a holdings snapshot would state the same money twice. RangefinderInvest offers to move the value to Cash balance and will not save the snapshot until you do, or until you change which fund the account calls core cash.

A cash-vehicle change is dated on or before today. The lineage records what already happened; a change dated ahead of today would take the balance out of holdings without yet putting it into cash.
